Safety During and After the Storm

DURING THE STORM
  • Monitor AM 850 or AM 640 for the latest information

  • Stay indoors at all times, do not go outside until the all-clear is given by state and local officials

  • Remain on the lower floors of your home

  • Avoid rooms with large windows or glass doors, stay away from all exterior doors

  • If the power goes out, do not use candles as a light source. If a fire starts, rescuers may not be able to respond.

  • Stay off cellular and land-line phones, the phone lines should be kept open for emergency use only

  • Do not operate portable generators or gas grills indoors

  • BEWARE OF THE EYE! As the center of the storm passes the weather will become deceptively calm. The storm is not over! The storm force winds may return at any moment from the opposite direction. During this period you should remain indoors, do not go outside to survey damage or attempt repairs. Remain in a safe area.

  • If your roof or windows are breached, retreat to your safe-room and remain there until the storm has passed

AFTER THE STORM
  • Continue to monitor AM 850 or AM 640 for the latest information including boil-water orders, businesses and municipal services that are open and ice-distribution locations

  • Once the all-clear has been given and it is safe to go outside exercise extreme caution

  • Watch out for downed power lines. Even if the power is out broken lines can become energized without warning. Report downed lines to FPL immediately.

  • Avoid standing water, it may be contaminated by sewage or even be electrified by underground power lines

  • Check on elderly neighbors or those with special needs

  • Check your gas supply lines for damage. If you smell gas, clear the area and do not return until the gas has been turned off. Contact your gas company immediately.

  • Be careful when clearing debris, especially if you are using a chainsaw. Don't be afraid to ask a neighbor for help.

  • Document all damage by taking photographs

  • Do not operate portable generators or gas grills indoors

  • If you are able to remain in your home use only flashlights for a light source, do not use candles.

  • If you feel that your home is unsafe due to storm damage seek refuge with a friend or relative or, as a last resort, a hurricane shelter.

  • Use your water supply sparingly; follow any boil-water orders that are issued for your area

  • Be cautious of spoiled food, if you suspect food is spoiled, throw it out

DRIVING AFTER THE STORM
  • You should not drive your car unless it is absolutely necessary but if you must drive your car:

  • Drive slowly and cautiously, approach all intersections with extreme care

  • When you approach a dark traffic signal, treat it as a 4-way stop sign.

  • Watch out for storm debris in the on the roadways

  • Do not drive through flooded areas, it can be difficult to determine how deep the water is and your vehicle may become disabled

  • Avoid disaster areas; keep the roads there clear for rescuers

  • Obey all orders given by police or other officials

  • Do not proceed into areas that are marked with barricades or roadblocks
